The community of Ballyporeen is located in the south west of County Tipperary in southern Ireland. The area lies between the Galtee and Knockmealdown mountain ranges. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy. Pastoral cattle farming is primarily carried out in the fertile plain while sheep rearing and coniferous forests dominate the hill sides. For most other employment opportunities, the area lies in the commuter belts of centers such as Mitchelstown, Cahir, Clonmel and Cork.
The 2016 Census showed a population of 921 people living in the Ballyporeen Electoral Division, a fraction of its 1841 total of 4326.
Ballyporeen has a rich historical and sporting tradition. The remains of the pre-reformation church site at Templetenny is certainly worth a visit .
The area is best known for being an ancestral home of former U.S President Ronald Reagan who's great grandfather emigrated in the 1850's. He made a much publicised public visit in 1984.
The Mitchelstown Caves which are of renowned geological interest lie approximately 6km from the village and are open to the public year round.
Ballyporeen is easily accessible, being approximately 10 minutes drive from Junction 12 of the M8 motorway.
